From Mary
I first met Dieter in Broubster forest. He was dog walking. We got chatting and he told me of his recent move to Caithness and the plans he shared with Kune of building an eco house. Interestingly he`d also applied to work as a countryside ranger for Highland Council. (I was a ranger at that time.)
Dieter got the job and became part of the Caithness team. He enriched us with his excellent people skills, sense of fun and quirky approach to environmental education. His acting and musical ability made him popular at leading events for family groups. His knowledge of Caithness grew and I remember him saying every day was a bit like a holiday as he explored and discovered new places in the north. He had a particular love of the hills and wild places.
I retired in late 2009 but by then Dieter and Kune had become our friends. George and I watched the trials and tribulations of building the first ever straw house in Caithness. We were impressed by their energy and success in turning Arundi into such a comfortable home for the three of them. Arden also delighted us with her skills as an entertainer probably inherited from her dad.
I last saw Dieter here at our house. He spent the afternoon with his chain saw cutting logs for our winter fuel supply. This was only one of his many acts of kindness. We will miss him sorely.
